Introduction

Championed as one of the greatest independent watchmakers, Kari Voutilainen’s timepieces are some of the most sought-after and desirable examples of Swiss watchmaking on the market, and for good reason. With a production of just around 70 timepieces a year from a staff of around 35 people, Kari’s timepieces are simply breath-taking in every regard. Handmade pieces of artistry, his timepieces embody genuine watchmaking talent in their totality with almost every piece of his watches, from their screws to their incredible dials, being handmade. Launched in 2015 as an expansion of the GMT-6 collection, the GMT 216 GMR features an UP/DOWN power reserve indicator with a retrograde hand alongside the subdial at 6 o’clock for the second time zone function that also boasts a stunningly elaborate AM/PM indicator through a depiction of the Sun and the Moon. Powered by an in-house caliber that combines 250 parts into a horological marvel, GMT 216 GMT went on to win the GPHG in 2015 due to how incredible it is. While Kari could have simply added a power reserve module to the GMT-6’s movement, he instead completely redesigned the movement to integrate the retrograde power reserve function, while maintaining his signature caseback design. This also allows his movements to be as thin as possible, while also maintaining structural integrity, an important factor for Kari as he seeks to future-proof his timepieces. Offered in an 18kt white gold case, this 39mm timepiece’s main feature is its stunning blue solid silver hand-turned dial that combines a multitude of textures and finishes from the rosette pattern at its center to the clous-de-paris finish along its chaptering that houses its applied Roman numerals. A masterful piece of watchmaking, this timepiece highlights exactly why Kari Voutilainen’s timepieces are as highly regarded as they are.
