Introduction
Released in the mid-1950s, the Airain Type 20 was designed specifically for the French Air Force to meet requirements drawn up by the French Ministry of Defence for a watch that their Air Force could wear. These requirements were quite reasonable with low-light legibility, reliability, accuracy of +/- 8 seconds a day, a flyback function, and a stainless steel case all being of utmost importance. Following quick approval after Airain's bid, the watches were delivered to the French Air Force throughout the 1950s along with similar watches from a handful of other watchmakers. Following on from the Type 20, Airain released the Type 21 for production throughout the 1960s with a similar appearance and movement. Offered here we have a Type 21 from the 1960s with a stainless steel case and a beautifully preserved black dial. Not often offered for public sale, this is good an opportunity as ever to add one to your collection.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The case is sharp and full, and appears to still have the original factory finish. The caseback numbers are clear and fully visible. The dial has started to oxidize, showing an even tropical effect. Luminous hands and dial match in consistency.
Our Perspective
An iconic aviator's tool watch, the Type 21's French Air Force specified design has since informed decades of pilot's watches with its display and construction remaining as timeless as ever.
