Introduction

Considered to be the godfather of modern independent watchmaking, Svend Andersen burst onto the scene of watchmaking at Montres et Bijoux at the age of just 27 after making a watch inside of a bottle. Known as the watchmaker of the impossible from that point on, Svend Andersen was destined for greatness within the world of horology, and he has successfully enacted upon that mission, with his watches considered some of the best made in the industry. A testament to the talents of his brand, which he started in 1979, 10 years after he made the bottle watch, Svend Andersen debuted the Mundus World Time in 1994. Launched as a limited edition collection of just 24 pieces all in platinum, the resulting watch was, and still is, the world’s thinnest worldtimer, standing only 4.2mm tall. Featuring a symmetrical case with crowns at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions and Vendome-style lugs, the Mundus wears with a sleek presence that is mainly the gift of its incredibly thin construction, the result of its manual-wind F. Piguet cal. 9.51 movement being fitted with an in-house worldtime module. An impressive step forward in the arena of thin watches, a hotly contested battleground to this day, the Mundus has remained at the top of its hill for over 30 years.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting a two-tone grey and silver dial with the outline of the world map on its grey central section, the Mundus' display is an obvious play on its complication.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Thanks to its symmetrical 4.2mm tall case being made of platinum, the Mundus still wears with an impressive heft on the wrist, even though it is the world's thinnest world timer. With vendome lugs and dual crowns, it is wonderfully unique on the wrist too.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

The platinum case is in excellent condition, with a few light scratches and marks. The display case back is also excellent, showing a few minor scratches and light marks and with crisp engravings and hallmarks. The dial is truly excellent, featuring very clean white metal no-lume hands. The watch is fitted with a black leather Andersen strap and a platinum A-logo pin buckle, both in excellent condition.

Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The world's thinnest world timer for over 30 years, the Mundus is a legendary watch that has been a significant part of Svend Andersen's history, and we are incredibly proud to offer one of the 24 examples for sale.
