Introduction

With an impressive 23 in-house calibers to their name, Armin Strom have been making incredible use of their completely in-house manufacture since 2009, when they launched their first in-house caliber, the ARM09. Since then, Armin Strom have capitalized on their creative team of engineers, talented watchmakers and a meticulous attention-to-detail to create some of horology’s most technically impressive independent movements. While they might lack the economic power of the larger brands, they make up for it with inventiveness, something the Orbit First Edition is full of. Launched in 2022 as a stainless steel integrated sports watch, the Orbit boasts a contemporary sports watch aesthetic with a modern 43.4mm diameter case that boasts a meticulously crafted stainless steel integrated H-link bracelet. Sporting a black ceramic bezel that reveals the secret to its inventiveness, the Orbit’s bezel’s red inscription at 12 o’clock reads the word “DATE” with an arrow on either side, hinting at its on-demand retrograde pointer date display. Operated by the pusher at 10 o’clock, the Orbit’s date display features two modes, one at rest where the large red-tipped arrow hand points at 12 o’clock, keeping the time-telling subdial at 9 o’clock unobstructed, and an “engaged” mode. This mode is activated by the pusher and allows the date hand to jump to the day’s date on the bezel where it will remain and function as normal until the pusher is pressed once again. With a novel approach to one of watchmaking’s oldest complications, Armin Strom have showcased that they deserve the acclaim they have garnered in the realm of unparalleled watchmaking mastery, something that is reflected throughout the Orbit, such as within the fine finishing of its automatic cal. ASS20 movement that is on view through the dial side and reverse of the Orbit, as is a signature of Armin Strom to show off their incredible work.

Our Perspective

A new type of watch in many ways for Armin Strom, the Orbit shows that the artisanal watchmaker isn't just able to create an incredible new movement with a novel take on even the most ubiquitous complication, but also a new design on one of watchmaking's most ubiquitous designs, the integrated bracelet sports watch.
