Introduction
Launched in the 1980s as Audemars Piguet began to look further afield in order to create designs that we equally as avant garde as their successful Royal Oak as they endeavored to build on their identity as a design powerhouse, the Audemars Piguet Bamboo has emerged as a darling of vintage Audemars Piguet design, much like its sibling model the Cobra. Boasting an integrated bracelet design, the Bamboo – as its name suggests – features a horizontal bamboo-like design whereby its bracelet and tonneau-shaped case is made up ofbamboo stalks that are seemingly held together with intertwined rope lashings. Made of precious metals and often set with diamond dials, the Bamboo is an icon of 1980s AP. Offered here we have an 18kt white gold example with a dark blue diamond-set dial, which subtly references the luxury that AP has come to signify over the decades. Powered by a manual-wind movement, this ref. 14644BC is is full-sized 27mm x 32mm variant that fits perfectly within the current market’s desire for unique design-focused mechanical timepieces made of precious metals.

THE DIAL
Featuring an understated dark blue dial with diamond-set hour markers, the Bamboo's dial allows its construction to do the talking, while still reminding its wearer of the luxury on their wrist thanks to its diamond-set hour markers.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Featuring a wonderfully unique construction that draws inspiration from a rather unusual source, the Bamboo's name literally references the bamboo stalks that seemingly make up its construction's design.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
The watch is in overall excellent condition. The white gold case is very well defined, with signs of the original finish still present. There are light scratches and a couple of light nicks in places. The case back has light scratches and a very well defined serial engraving and hallmarks. The blue dial is in excellent condition, with crisp embossed AP quartets finish, diamond-set hour indexes, and sharp white text. The white gold hands are very clean. The integrated white gold bracelet has negligible play between the links, with a well-preserved finish and detail. The bracelet currently fits a 6 1/2" wrist and has 23 links, 1 of which is removable.
Our Perspective
Fitting perfectly within the current market’s desire for unique design-focused mechanical timepieces made of precious metals, the Bamboo and watches like it such as the AP Cobra have become incredibly collectible in recent years as collectors seek out fresh designs.
