How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Renowned for their unwavering passion for skeletonization, Audemars Piguet have demonstrated their skill for the craft throughout the decades ever since they revitalised the artform by launching the first skeletonized wristwatch in the early 1930s. Since then they have created a plethora of skeletonized timepieces, one of which being the Decagonal Skeleton watch that we have here. Boasting a svelte 31mm 18kt yellow gold case with a braided decagonal bezel and central lugs, this watch is an immediately unique timepiece that steps out from the design ethos of its time during the mid-70s. However, its most defining feature is its skeletonized dial. With an engraved golden chapter ring bearing diamond-set cardinal hour markers, the vast majority of this example’s display is made up of a perfectly unobstructed view of its beautifully open-worked manual-wind movement. Captivating the eye with its bevelled bridges, openworked architecture and intricate mechanics, this watch blends its gentle construction with its surprisingly complex display to create a timepiece that is truly sophisticated. A testament to Audemars Piguet's enduring legacy as a pioneer in the art of skeletonization and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of haute horlogerie, this is a watch worth exploring and enjoying indeed.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case is well defined, with gentle wear on the edge detailing and light surface marks, as expected for a watch of this vintage. The display case back features fully legible engravings and a hallmark on the edge. The inner bezel has a fine engraving in excellent condition, with double diamonds at the quarters. The hands are clean. The watch is fitted with a black alligator AP strap and a yellow gold Audemars Piguet-signed buckle, both in excellent condition. The watch comes with an Audemars Piguet watch pouch.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

Different from the watches of its time in more ways than one, this watch and others like it showcased that small artisanally-produced precious metal dress watches were still an important market to explore for watchmakers like Audemars Piguet, who wanted to demonstrate their passion for Haute Horlogerie and all attention to detail.
