Introduction
Famed for their aggressively avant-garde take on design and aesthetics, Audemars Piguet has long been known to blend aspects of their history with their own take on horology, however sometimes they lean more into classical aesthetics, much like with this ref. 5042 Classique that we have here. Understated in its design, the Audemars Piguet ref. 5042 is a round 32.5mm timepiece from the 1950s that leans into the prevailing dress watch aesthetic of the time, with a curvy platinum case and an understated cream dial. Indeed, not one to let their watches lack some exuberance, this example’s hour markers are set with diamonds, ensuring the watch is elevated beyond the typical dress watch of the time. Powered by the ultra-thin cal. 2001, this manual-wind watch is a thin and elegant dress watch that celebrates mid-century watchmaking design while also showcasing AP’s design talents and flair.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Featuring gentle curves where its sloping lugs flow into its midcase, this example's platinum construction sits on the wrist with a confident and luxurious poise.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The platinum case shows light surface scratches and scuffs, while the case back displays scratches and small nicks and retains very well-defined stamps. The hallmarks on the backs of the lugs remain legible. The dial shows some surface marks, while the diamond-set hour markers and settings remain excellent. The hands show light scuffs. It is fitted with a black crocodile strap and a 18k wg pin buckle stamped AP and Wenger.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
Blending mid-century dress watch aesthetics with their signature design flair, the ref. 5042 is no ordinary dress watch, as signalled by its diamond-set dial and platinum case.
