Introduction

A popular timepiece originating in the 1950s and remaining in production until the late '60s, the Audemars Piguet Disco Volante ("Flying Disc" in Italian) is a casual take on the luxurious designs that had dominated the wristwatch market for the better part of 50 years. A desirable timepiece in its day, the Disco Volante was beloved by collectors for its unique aesthetic and lean profile. Thanks to the ultra-thin skeletonized AP cal. 2003 powering it, this Disco Volante measures in at around 4mm thick – a truly remarkable achievement for the time. This slim profile, combined with its thick saucer-like multi-textured bezel, gave the Disco Volante a futuristic design that proved to be wonderfully popular with collectors at the time. Whilst it is an incredible piece of horological engineering, the Disco Volante's most vital asset is perhaps its presence on the wrist. While the Disco Volante is a rare and desirable collection in and of itself, this particular example is noteworthy due to its absolute rarity, with no other examples bearing the same skeletonized dial and movement combination coming to market, at least to our knowledge. With its textured bezel, skeletonized dial and movement, integrated crown, silky 18kt yellow gold bracelet, and exhibition caseback – a rarity for this collection - this Disco Volante is as aesthetically pleasing as they come and wears fantastically as it hugs your wrist and announces itself as a true piece of horological excellence.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting a perfect view of its skeletonized movement, this Disco Volante example completely lacks a dial in just about every sense of the word, resulting in an incredibly unique display.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Featuring a razor-thin case and movement, the Disco Volante was a groundbreaking innovation for its time, and today it remains a hallmark of AP's distinctive design talents, with this example's multi-textured bezel showcasing their ability to add flair to what is already a unique timepiece.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case features a well-defined decorative pattern on the front, with gentle wear around the edges and a couple of light marks. The skeletonized movement shows minor/light signs of aging around some of the bridges. The polished bezel has light surface wear and retains its black lacquer hour markers. The case back shows well-defined stamps and hallmarks. The yellow gold hands are very clean. The 18k associated (Not made by AP) yellow gold bracelet is in excellent condition, with light surface scratches consistent with age and use. It fits approximately a 7” wrist. Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Our Perspective

An incredibly rare example from an already rare collection, this Disco Volante combines the collection's distinctive design language with some unusual design details like a skeletonized movement and dial, resulting in something truly special.
