Introduction
There is a compelling argument that Audemars Piguet’s ultra-thin perpetual calendars deserve almost as much credit for carrying the manufacture through the Quartz Crisis as the Royal Oak. Developed at a moment when complicated mechanical watchmaking was under existential threat, the Quantième Perpétuel Automatique combined an exceptionally thin automatic movement with one of watchmaking’s most demanding complications. The ref. 25657 followed in 1982, distinguished by its recessed calendar sub-dials and beautifully restrained 36mm case. Production continued until 1993, with 1,821 examples made across all metals, of which 1,309 were yellow gold.
Dating to 1989 according to its accompanying Extract from the Archives, the example offered here is arguably the reference in its purest form: an 18K yellow gold case paired with a classical white dial and matching gold hands and hour markers. At its heart is the automatic cal. 2120/2800, based upon the legendary ultra-thin Jaeger-LeCoultre cal. 920 architecture and displaying the day, date, month and moon phase. Measuring just 36mm across and remarkably slim despite its mechanical complexity, the 25657 is a wonderful expression of the understated complicated watchmaking that defined Audemars Piguet during this fascinating period.

THE DIAL
Beautifully balanced and highly legible despite the amount of information it displays, the white dial uses recessed subsidiary dials for the day, date and month, complemented by a moon phase display at 6 o’clock. Slender yellow gold hands and applied hour markers provide an elegant contrast and reinforce the classical character of the watch.

THE CONSTRUCTION
At 36mm in diameter, the ref. 25657BA is remarkably restrained for a perpetual calendar, with a stepped bezel, short downturned lugs and an exceptionally slim profile. Executed here in 18K yellow gold, its traditional proportions belie the considerable mechanical complexity housed within.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and some more noticeable nicks to the rear edge of the mid-case and case back. The hallmarks on the case side remain well defined, while the case back engravings are excellent. The dial shows some degradation around the outer edge, a couple of surface marks, and light oxidation to the sub-dial rings. It is fitted with its original Audemars Piguet leather strap and an 18K yellow gold AP pin buckle showing surface scratches. Comes with an Extract from the Audemars Piguet Archives.
Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
Our Perspective
Often overshadowed by the Royal Oak, the ref. 25657 represents an important chapter in Audemars Piguet’s history, combining an ultra-thin automatic movement with one of watchmaking’s most demanding complications. Elegant, discreet and beautifully proportioned, it is a compelling reminder of the manufacture’s complicated watchmaking during the 1980s.
