When Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak in 1972, it fundamentally challenged the conventions of luxury watchmaking. Designed by Gérald Genta, its stainless steel construction, integrated bracelet and distinctive octagonal bezel established an entirely new category of high-end sports watches. Initially met with scepticism, the Royal Oak would become one of the most influential designs in modern horology, its combination of industrial aesthetics and traditional Swiss craftsmanship inspiring generations of watchmakers. Fifty years after its introduction, Audemars Piguet revisited the collection in 2022, introducing a series of refinements that preserved Genta's original vision while bringing greater sophistication to the case, bracelet and movement.

Among these updated models was the ref. 15550ST, which replaced the previous 37mm ref. 15450ST. This example features a particularly elegant grey 'Grande Tapisserie' dial, creating an almost monochromatic aesthetic alongside the brushed and polished stainless steel case and bracelet. The revised proportions include a slimmer case profile and subtly reworked bracelet links, while the new automatic calibre 5900 offers improved performance and a 60-hour power reserve. Measuring 37mm in diameter and just 9.1mm thick, the watch occupies an appealing position within the Royal Oak collection, combining the presence of Genta's celebrated design with proportions that remain remarkably versatile. The grey dial adds a further dimension of understated sophistication, allowing the Royal Oak's extraordinary case architecture to take centre stage.
