Introduction

When Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak in 1972, it fundamentally changed the landscape of luxury watchmaking. Designed by Gérald Genta, the original ref. 5402 challenged established conventions by combining a stainless steel case with the finishing, craftsmanship and price normally associated with precious metal watches. Its octagonal bezel, exposed screws and integrated bracelet created a distinctive aesthetic that would become one of the most influential designs in modern horology. The Royal Oak Chronograph, introduced in 1997 to celebrate the collection's 25th anniversary, added another dimension to this celebrated design, incorporating a mechanical chronograph without compromising the architectural character of the original.

The ref. 26715ST represents a contemporary interpretation of the Royal Oak Chronograph, combining the collection's unmistakable design with more compact proportions. Measuring 38mm in diameter and 11mm thick, its stainless steel case features the characteristic octagonal bezel, secured by eight hexagonal screws, and the integrated bracelet that has defined the Royal Oak for more than five decades. The grey Grande Tapisserie dial is complemented by contrasting silver-toned chronograph registers, creating a restrained, almost monochromatic appearance. White gold applied hour markers and Royal Oak hands provide excellent legibility, while the automatic calibre 2385 delivers chronograph functionality alongside a date display. With its carefully considered proportions and distinctive dial configuration, the ref. 26715ST offers a particularly versatile expression of Audemars Piguet's celebrated sports chronograph.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The grey dial features Audemars Piguet's distinctive Grande Tapisserie pattern, complemented by three contrasting silver-toned chronograph registers. Applied white gold hour markers and Royal Oak hands feature luminescent coating, while the date aperture is positioned between four and five o'clock. The monochromatic colour scheme emphasises the geometric character of the Royal Oak design.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 38mm stainless steel case measures 11mm thick and features the Royal Oak's signature octagonal bezel with eight exposed hexagonal screws. Alternating brushed and polished surfaces highlight the complex geometry of the case and integrated bracelet. A glareproofed sapphire crystal, screw-locked crown and water resistance of 50 metres complete the construction.

Condition

Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The stainless steel case and bracelet show signs of careful wear, with a few small surface marks. The dial and hands are like new. The stainless steel bracelet has negligible play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 19 links, eight of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7¼” wrist. Comes with inner and outer boxes and warranty card.

Our Perspective

The 38mm Royal Oak Chronograph offers an appealing balance between the original Royal Oak's proportions and the functionality of a modern sports chronograph. Its understated grey and silver dial makes this reference a particularly versatile interpretation of Audemars Piguet's most recognisable design.
