Introduction

Released in 1972 and designed by Gerald Genta, watchmaking's most famous designer, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak was the first stainless steel luxury sports watch ever to exist. Released as a tactic to survive the quartz crisis, the Royal Oak can single-handedly be thanked for AP's existence today due to its astounding success, albeit it wasn't an overnight hit. Its sizeable tonneau-shaped case, signature integrated bracelet, octagonal bezel, exposed screws, and steel construction failed to win over collectors until a few years later. Today, the Royal Oak is one of the most highly-coveted timepieces in all horology as its previously dismissed design details have permeated across the industry and into watches like the Patek Philippe Nautilus, Vacheron Constantin Overseas, Rolex Oysterquartz, amongst many other legendary timepieces.

A legend within the watchmaking industry like no other, over the decades since its 1972 debut, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak has grown to become one of the most legendary and sought-after watches in the industry, no matter the material of choice, dial design or complication it bears. However, one variant sits at the throne of this legendary timepiece, the ref. 15202PT.OO.1240PT.01 – the exact reference we have here. Taking the Royal Oak’s revered 39mm octagonal case design, the ref. 15202PT is made of platinum for the first time in the ref. 15202's history and features a rich smoked green sunburst dial that is completely free from one of the Royal Oak’s most distinguishing features, its signature Petite Tapisserie pattern. Launched as a farewell model of the 15202 reference, this final edition of the ref. 15202 is stunning and fittingly unique. While this timepiece has not been declared a limited edition run, it is indeed a rare watch with only a few hundred pieces believed to have been sold between its launch in 2021 and its discontinuation in the end of 2022, which is when the entire 15202 family was discontinued to make way for the new ref. 16202 that was introduced in 2023. A beautiful variant of an iconic watch, the ref. 15202PT is perhaps one of the ultimate watches for any Royal Oak collector to add to their collection.

THE DIAL

While it might lack the Royal Oak's signature Tapisserie pattern the ref. 15202PT's dial is just as stunning as ever with its smoked effect taking its bright green center to a near-black at its periphery.

THE CONSTRUCTION

While the ref. 15202PT's form is as recognisable as any other 39mm Royal Oak variant, its platinum construction ensures that it is indeed one of the heaviest and most luxurious Royal Oak variants ever produced.

Our Perspective

An icon updated to fit in with the watch industry's recent love of green, the Royal Oak ref. 15202PT is a wonderfully luxurious creation that retain's AP's avant-garde design and showcases everything the Royal Oak is about.
