Introduction

Released in 1972 and designed by Gerald Genta, watchmaking's most famous designer, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak was the first stainless steel luxury sports watch ever to exist. Released as a tactic to survive the quartz crisis, the Royal Oak can single-handedly be thanked for AP's existence today due to its astounding success, albeit it wasn't an overnight hit. Its sizeable tonneau-shaped case, signature integrated bracelet, octagonal bezel, exposed screws, and steel construction failed to win over collectors until a few years later. Today, the Royal Oak is one of the most highly-coveted timepieces in all horology as its previously dismissed design details have permeated across the industry and into watches like the Patek Philippe Nautilus, Vacheron Constantin Overseas, Rolex Oysterquartz, amongst many other legendary timepieces.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting an incredibly rare and desirable dial, the ref. 14802ST reveals its anniversary status through its rich salmon color, a color that is seldom used in the Royal Oak collection, and less so in stainless steel variants.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Derived from the original "Jumbo", the ref. 14802ST was launched as the second "Jumbo" model, with the same 39mm diameter stainless steel construction.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case remains well defined, with light surface marks and scratches visible on the polished sections. The display case back features crisp engraving around the edge and shows only light wear to the screw heads. The salmon petit tapisserie dial is in excellent condition, and the hands are very clean. Hands have been replaced at some point and luminous are of a lighter shade than the dial. The integrated steel bracelet is also in excellent condition with some light surface marks. The bracelet has 18 links, 2 of which are removable, and fits an approximately 6 3/4” wrist. The watch comes complete with its original box, booklet, and an archive extract. The specific dial code for the salmon dial (02) is noted on the archive.

Our Perspective

Launched to celebrate the Royal Oak's 20th anniversary, the ref. 14802ST reintroduced the collection's 39mm dimensions to the market along with a luxurious salmon dial and true exclusivity through its limited production run of just 1000 pieces, of which only 700 were made of steel.
