Introduction
Introduced around 1991, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ref. 14700 occupies a fascinating transitional position in the evolution of Gérald Genta’s landmark design. While the original ref. 5402 established the 39mm “Jumbo” format in 1972, Audemars Piguet subsequently experimented with more compact interpretations of the Royal Oak. The ref. 14700 appears to have been produced for only a brief period before the better-known ref. 14790 arrived around 1992, making it an important bridge between the earliest Royal Oaks and the mid-size family that followed. Contemporary scholarship estimates that approximately 500 examples were produced in stainless steel, although definitive factory production figures have not been published.
At 36mm across and just 7.5mm thick, the ref. 14700 is often referred to by collectors as the “Mini-Jumbo”, and its proportions explain why. A comparatively thin bezel allows for an unusually expansive dial opening, reportedly only around 1mm smaller than that of the original ref. 5402, giving the watch considerably greater visual presence than its dimensions might suggest. This example features a slate grey Petite Tapisserie dial with the earlier-style Audemars Piguet signature, elongated hour markers and date at three o’clock. Its case back is individually numbered No. 437, while inside is the automatic calibre 2125, an ultra-thin movement derived from the Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 889.

THE DIAL
The slate grey Petite Tapisserie dial retains several characteristics associated with earlier Royal Oaks, including the understated square-and-lozenge texture and traditional Audemars Piguet signature. A relatively thin bezel creates an unusually broad dial opening, while elongated luminous hour markers and matching hands reinforce the clean, expansive appearance.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 36mm stainless steel case retains the defining Royal Oak architecture of an octagonal bezel, exposed hexagonal screws and integrated bracelet, yet measures just 7.5mm thick. Its comparatively thin bezel and broad dial distinguish the ref. 14700 from the succeeding ref. 14790. The case back is engraved Royal Oak No. 437.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks to the edges, while remaining well defined. The case back shows surface scratches and retains well-defined engravings. The dial is in near-mint condition, with some light discolouration to the luminous material in the hour markers. The hands remain clean, although there are some pinprick holes in the luminous material of the minute hand. The integrated stainless steel bracelet shows surface marks and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 19 links, 5 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7” wrist. Comes with comprehensive service papers from 2011.
Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
Our Perspective
Produced only briefly before the arrival of the ref. 14790, the ref. 14700 represents a particularly interesting moment in the Royal Oak’s evolution. Its 36mm diameter suggests a conventional mid-size Royal Oak, but the slim case, thin bezel and unusually expansive Petite Tapisserie dial give it proportions much closer in spirit to the original Jumbo. This is a compelling transitional reference that retains much of the character of the earliest Royal Oaks in a more compact format.
