Introduction
Founded by Sylvain Berneron, Berneron approaches independent watchmaking from the principle that mechanics and design should be conceived as a single object rather than one being forced to accommodate the other. The Mirage was the first expression of that philosophy, abandoning the conventional round movement and symmetrical case in favour of an entirely shaped construction. Its flowing asymmetric form is governed by the Golden Ratio, producing a watch that appears almost distorted while remaining carefully proportioned. Even details such as the offset oval crown and the way the case extends over the strap were developed specifically for the design.
This is the yellow gold Sienna version of the original Mirage, ref. 3438MS.G02. Measuring 33.5mm across, 37.5mm long and only 7mm thick, its 18K yellow gold case surrounds a matching solid-gold dial with warm sienna-coloured markings and an integrated small-seconds display. Beneath it sits a proprietary shaped manual-wind movement developed with Le Cercle des Horlogers specifically to follow the unconventional architecture of the case. Its mainplate and bridges are themselves made from 18K gold, while the movement's curved wheels, balance and bridge echo the distortion visible from the front. The result is a rare example in which virtually every element of a watch has been developed around a single design idea.

THE DIAL
The dial is made from solid 18K yellow gold, combining satin-brushed and polished surfaces with warm sienna-coloured markings in Berneron's asymmetric sector-style arrangement. The typography was designed specifically for the Mirage, while the curved 18K gold hour and minute hands are unusually stacked with the hour hand above the minute hand, helping accommodate the strongly curved Hesalite crystal without increasing the overall thickness.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The Mirage measures 33.5mm wide, 37.5mm long and an exceptionally slender 7mm thick, with its asymmetric 18K yellow gold case designed according to the Golden Ratio. A Hesalite crystal allows the pronounced curvature required by the design, while a sapphire case back reveals the similarly shaped movement. Even the spring bars and pin buckle are executed in 18K yellow gold.

Our Perspective
The original Mirage is the watch that established Berneron's identity almost immediately. Its importance lies not simply in its unusual shape, but in the extent to which that shape dictates everything beneath it, from the solid-gold dial and curved hands to a movement engineered specifically around the case. In yellow gold and sienna, the result has an especially warm, almost surrealist character: unconventional contemporary independent watchmaking executed with thoroughly traditional materials and finishing.
