Introduction
A German-born and Geneva-trained independent watchmaker best known for inventing the Central Impulse Chronometer that cemented his standing among the most serious minds in the craft, Bernhard Lederer launched his eponymous in 1986. Debuting in the 2000s, the Universe is his most poetic work. Featuring a rotating minute subdial that serves as the hour indicator, completing one revolution every twelve hours, the BLU’s display features an impressive sense of depth and movement that is immediately arresting. Paired with an black aventurine dial, this example’s display is perfectly poetic given the galactic aesthetic of the material as it shifts from a near-black to a scattered star field depending on the light. Featuring a 39mm stainless steel case with a stainless steel bracelet attached to the case with Vendome-style lugs, the BLU is as unique on the wrist as its display suggests it would be.

THE DIAL
Featuring a rotating minute subdial, the BLU's black aventurine display is constantly transforming, with the time on this example showing 10:10.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches and light marks, while the display case back retains well-defined engravings around the edge with light surface scratches. The aventurine dial is like new, and the hands remain very clean. There is a mark on the crystal near one o’clock. It is fitted with a steel bracelet showing light surface marks and negligible play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 19 links, 6 of which are removable, and fits approximately an 8” wrist.
Our Perspective
Combining a unique construction with an unusual dial layout that has since been replicated by plenty of brands, the BLU showcases just how ahead of its time Lederer was.
