Introduction

When Breitling introduced the Emergency in 1995, it created one of the most remarkable professional wristwatches of the modern era. Developed with the needs of pilots and adventurers in mind, the Emergency combined a highly accurate quartz movement with an integrated distress transmitter capable of broadcasting on the international aviation emergency frequency of 121.5 MHz. Concealed within its substantial titanium case, the transmitter could be activated by extending a specially designed antenna, allowing rescue teams equipped to monitor the frequency to locate an individual in distress. It was an extraordinary technical achievement, transforming the wristwatch from a conventional timekeeping instrument into a potentially lifesaving piece of equipment.

This first-generation Emergency, ref. E76321, belongs to an unusual series commissioned by Blackwater, the American private military and security company. According to accounts of the commission, just 150 examples were ordered through Precious Gem, an authorised Breitling retailer in Williamsburg, Virginia. The first 100 watches were reportedly delivered in 2006, followed by a further 50 in 2007. Distinguished by a specially commissioned Blackwater logo on the dial, these watches were intended for company personnel, including contractors deployed overseas and senior members of the organisation. The lightweight titanium case measures approximately 43mm and houses Breitling's thermocompensated SuperQuartz calibre 76, while the integrated emergency transmitter remains the defining feature of the model. Combining an unusual corporate commission with one of the most technically ambitious watches of its generation, the Blackwater Emergency occupies a distinctive position within Breitling's modern history.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The black dial features the distinctive Blackwater logo, identifying this example as part of the special commission produced for the American security company. Its highly legible display combines luminous hands and hour markers with the digital indications characteristic of the first-generation Emergency, retaining the functional aesthetic associated with Breitling's professional instruments.

THE EMERGENCY TRANSMITTER

THE EMERGENCY TRANSMITTER

The defining feature of the Emergency is its integrated miniature radio transmitter, designed to broadcast a distress signal on the international aviation emergency frequency of 121.5 MHz. Activated by unscrewing and extending the antenna, the system was developed to assist rescue teams in locating individuals in remote or hazardous environments. The transmitter requires specialist handling and should never be activated outside an authorised emergency or testing procedure.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 43mm titanium case combines a lightweight construction with the substantial proportions required to accommodate both the movement and emergency transmitter. Its satin-finished surfaces reflect the watch's utilitarian character, while the distinctive antenna housing immediately identifies it as an Emergency. The case architecture was developed around the practical requirements of professional aviation and survival equipment.

Condition

Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The titanium case shows a few signs of careful wear, most notably to the case back. The dial and hands are in near-mint condition. The titanium bracelet shows light signs of wear, with a couple of small surface marks. The bracelet is fitted with 15 links, five of which are removable, and fits approximately an 8¼” wrist. Comes with an extensive assortment of accessories, including carrying case, guarantee, receipts, booklets, DVD, VHS tape, screwdriver, emergency receiver, and associated accessories.

Please note: The operational status of the emergency transmitter should be established separately. A functioning watch does not necessarily mean that its emergency beacon is operational or suitable for emergency use.

Our Perspective

The Blackwater Emergency combines one of Breitling's most innovative professional watches with an unusual chapter in modern military contracting history. Reportedly limited to 150 examples, its specially commissioned dial makes it a distinctive variation of the original titanium Emergency.
