Introduction
Produced during the late 1960s, the Breitling GMT ref. 812 stands among the most unusual and technically ambitious chronographs of its era. Nicknamed the “Pancake” by collectors due to its broad, flattened case profile, the model combined oversized proportions with highly specialized functionality intended for professional aviation use. Powered by the rare Valjoux 724 GMT movement, the watch offered both chronograph and dual-time capability at a time when such complications were seldom combined within a single wristwatch. The ref. 812 perfectly reflects Breitling’s focus on aviation instruments during the period, embracing bold dimensions, maximum legibility, and highly functional design. Today, the GMT chronograph remains one of the most distinctive and collectible vintage Breitling chronographs from the golden age of jet-era tool watches.

THE DIAL
The dial features a highly functional chronograph layout designed for maximum legibility, with contrasting registers and clear GMT indication integrated into the display. The restrained monochromatic palette reinforces the watch’s instrument-like appearance, while the oversized proportions allow the dial layout to remain exceptionally open and readable.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The oversized 47mm stainless steel case gives the ref. 812 its unmistakable “Pancake” profile, with broad flat surfaces and substantial wrist presence reflecting Breitling’s professional aviation focus during the era. The watch is fitted with a rotating bezel and original locking Breitling bracelet, both of which contribute to its highly specialized tool-watch character.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows a few marks and light surface scratches and remains very well defined. The case back retains legible engravings. The bezel ring is near mint, as is the inner brown and beige rotating bezel. The black dial is excellent, with surface spotting and some discoloration to the lume plots. The central hands retain vibrant colour, with pin-prick holes visible in the lume of the minute hand, while the sub-dial hands show some corrosion around the pinions. It is fitted with a steel Breitling flip-lock clasp bracelet showing surface marks and negligible play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 18 links, 4 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 6½” wrist.
Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
AMENDED: The reference number was erroneously listed as 2115. This has since been corrected to the proper reference number, 812.
Our Perspective
I love the extremely oversized chronographs Breitling created during the 1970s. Measuring a whopping 47mm, and nicknamed “The Pancake”, it is surprisingly a joy to wear—comfortable on the wrist, and you just can’t beat the colors. Probably one of the most audacious GMT designs ever, this watch encapsulates a time when your watch could be your salvation, a true tool for pilots and travelers all over the world.
