Introduction
The Breitling Superocean ref. 2005 is one of the more unconventional dive chronographs of the 1960s. Rather than measuring elapsed seconds in the conventional manner, its central chronograph hand makes one complete revolution every hour, allowing elapsed minutes to be read directly against the dial. Because its movement is effectively imperceptible to the eye, Breitling added a small indicator above six o’clock to show whether the chronograph was running. The resulting ‘Slow Chronograph’ is a wonderfully purpose-driven solution to timing longer periods underwater.
Dating to 1967, this second-generation example adds another dimension with its colourful yachting bezel, bringing together two worlds in which Breitling was increasingly active during the period: diving and sailing. At 42mm, the Superocean was also remarkably large for its time, with a functional design that feels surprisingly modern today. Between the unusual chronograph architecture, oversized case and vivid bezel, the ref. 2005 captures the extraordinary ambition and experimentation that characterised Breitling’s professional watches during the 1960s.

THE DIAL
The black dial is dominated by the oversized luminous hour markers and broad central chronograph hand, which completes one revolution every 60 minutes. A small aperture above six indicates whether the chronograph is running. Particularly attractive is the original luminous material, which has aged to the characteristic mint-green tone associated with these watches.

THE CONSTRUCTION
At 42mm, the stainless steel case was imposing by 1960s standards and reflects the Superocean's professional diving intentions. This second-generation ref. 2005 is distinguished by its colourful rotating yachting bezel, adding another timing scale and giving an otherwise purposeful tool watch an unusually vibrant character.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back shows scratches and some marks around the notches, while the engravings remain very well defined. The winding crown and pusher show some surface marks. The black-coated bezel is well defined, with some wear to the finish in places, while the insert is in near-mint condition. The dial shows some spotting and marks to the outer white minute track. The luminous material at 6 o’clock is cracked. The small running seconds hand shows some discolouration, while the luminous material in the central minute hand is cracked. It is fitted with a black rubber strap and steel pin buckle. Comes with a digital Extract from the Archives.
Our Perspective
The ref. 2005 is vintage Breitling at its most inventive. The slow-moving chronograph, running indicator and oversized case demonstrate just how seriously the brand approached the rapidly developing professional dive-watch market, while the yachting bezel adds an almost eccentric splash of colour.
