Introduction
During the 1960s, Breitling was already firmly established as one of Switzerland's leading manufacturers of specialist chronographs, with the Navitimer and Chronomat demonstrating the company's expertise in developing instruments for pilots and other professionals. However, Willy Breitling recognised an opportunity to introduce a different kind of chronograph, one that would appeal to a younger generation interested in style as much as technical functionality. Introduced in 1964, the Top Time collection offered a more accessible and contemporary alternative to the elaborate slide-rule chronographs for which Breitling had become famous. With its clean dial layouts, colourful variations and relatively compact cases, the Top Time captured the changing tastes of the decade while retaining the mechanical qualities that had established Breitling's reputation.
Dating to 1971, this Top Time ref. 2002-33 represents a particularly attractive expression of the collection's more restrained design language. Its 36.5mm stainless steel case houses a matte black dial with two contrasting chronograph registers, complemented by applied hour markers and tritium-filled baton hands. The absence of a slide-rule bezel gives the watch a clean, purposeful appearance, while the traditional two-register arrangement provides excellent legibility. Power comes from the manually wound Valjoux 7733, a robust chronograph calibre widely used by Swiss manufacturers during the period. The Top Time also enjoys an interesting connection to popular culture, having appeared in modified form on Sean Connery's wrist in the 1965 James Bond film Thunderball, although that watch was based on a different Top Time configuration. With its distinctive early 1970s styling and appealing mechanical simplicity, the ref. 2002-33 illustrates why Breitling's vintage chronographs continue to attract an enthusiastic following among collectors.

THE DIAL
The matte black dial features a traditional two-register chronograph layout, with contrasting subsidiary counters and a clearly defined outer tachymeter scale. Tritium-filled baton hands and luminous hour markers provide legibility, while the restrained arrangement reflects the Top Time's original intention as a simpler, more accessible alternative to Breitling's specialist aviation chronographs.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The stainless steel case measures 36.5mm in diameter and features a traditional round profile with a polished bezel and straightforward lugs. Two chronograph pushers flank the winding crown, while a snap-fit case back completes the construction. Its relatively compact dimensions and uncomplicated design are characteristic of Breitling's more accessible chronographs from the period.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case shows surface scratches and small marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The case back shows scratches, while the engravings remain very well defined. The winding crown and pushers are in excellent condition, with some light surface scuffs. The black dial is in near-mint condition, with intact luminous hour plots, while the hands remain very clean. It is fitted with a brown leather rally-style strap and stainless steel pin buckle. Comes with original box, guarantee, service booklet, spare black strap with Heuer buckle, and a generic vintage stainless steel bracelet.
Our Perspective
The Top Time represents a fascinating departure from Breitling's more technically elaborate chronographs. With its matte black dial, balanced two-register layout and dependable Valjoux 7733 movement, this 1971 example captures the understated sporting elegance that made the collection so successful.
