Introduction

Launched in the 1970s during the golden era of chronographs, the BWC Regatta Yachtimer Big Eye is a watch from the historic Buttes Watch Co., who were founded in 1924. Boasting a 40mm x 44mm stainless steel cushion-shaped case, the Big Eye is powered by one of th most iconic chronograph movements ever, with the manual-wind Valjoux cal. 7733. Featuring a black dial with a red and white regatta timer subdial at 3 o’clock with a subtle green hand, this piece of 1970s horological nostalgia carries a punch of color that gives its rather unusual construction an even more interesting presence on the wrist.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Rich with 1970s charm and design pedigree, the Big Eye's cushion-shaped rectangular stainless steel case is an immediate throwback to the watch designs that were popularised at the time.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches, with some damage to the finish visible around the crown and pushers, while the case back displays a more noticeable scratch along with some rubbing. The bezel remains well defined, with some enamel missing from the tachymeter and telemeter scales. The dial remains near mint with crisp text and clean lume, and the hands remain excellent. It is fitted with a black rally-style strap and a steel pin buckle, both remaining in excellent condition.

Our Perspective

An unusual piece of horological history, the BWC Big Eye is rich with character and intrigue thanks to its uniquely colored Big Eye display and distinctive cushion-shaped case.
