Introduction
Holding a storied history that spans over a century, the Cartier Baignoire watch is a true icon in the world of luxury timepieces. Designed by Louis Cartier in 1912 specifically for the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia, it was the iconic brand’s first oval-shaped watch. Boasting an elliptical case design that was a departure from the traditional round and rectangular shapes of watches at the time, the Baignoire (named after the French word for “bathtub” due to its shape), or “oval-shaped watch” as it was known at the time, showcased Cartier's pioneering spirit and innovative approach to watchmaking, and watchmaking design. Initially designed as a bespoke piece for the select few, the Baignoire quickly garnered attention for its distinctive shape and refined aesthetics and finally entered regular production in 1957. Throughout the decades, Cartier has revisited and refined the Baignoire, releasing various interpretations that highlight different facets of its design. From minimalist interpretations with sleek, curved cases to opulent versions adorned with diamonds and intricate guilloché patterns, each Baignoire model reflects Cartier's commitment to craftsmanship and artistic expression. Offered here we have a Baignoire XL ref. 3031 from the 2010s. Powered by the wonderfully finished manual-wind cal. 430 MC movement, which is on display behind an exhibition caseback within its sizeable 33mm x 44mm 18kt yellow gold case, the Baignoire XL expands upon the model’s vintage design with Cartier’s timeless aesthetics to create a watch that is both modern and truly exceptional.

THE DIAL
Proving just how timeless Cartier's design has been over the 100+ years, the Baignoire's silver dial features the same black Roman numerals and blued steel hands that have become a lynchpin of Cartier's modern design. In addition, the ref. 3031's dial also features a subtle rosette guilloche design.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Boasting a rather sizeable 33mm x 44mm 18kt yellow gold construction, the ref. 3031 earns its designation as an 'XL' member of the Baignoire family, with its case being long enough to merit a gentle curve to match to contours of its wearer's wrist.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in excellent overall condition. Case exhibits a warm oxidation along the surface, with fine scratches visible. The caseback shows some minor scratches near the hidden strap lugs. Watch comes on a third party strap and its original 18k tang buckle. Please note that while the watch runs at time of cataloging, the timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.
Our Perspective
A modern expression of the Baignoire's timeless design, the XL ref. 3031 shows how Cartier's iconic designs can be effortlessly brought forward into the modern realm by making subtle tweaks and changes.
