Introduction

First introduced in 1922, the Cartier Cloche stands as one of the famed French Maison’s most distinctive and imaginative creations. Named after the French word for "bell," ther Cloche boasts a unique silhouette with a flat bottom along its 9 o’clock side, and a round curvy 3 o’clock side. designed not only as a wristwatch, the Cloche de Cartier was also intended to double as a small desk clock when placed on its side — a clever fusion of functionality and form that is typical of Cartier’s sense of expression. Its asymmetrical, avant-garde shape appealed to collectors with a taste for the unconventional, and over the decades, it appeared in very limited production runs, which is what we have here. The example we have are proud to offer here is Cloche 13 Rue de la Paix ref. WHCC0009, which was introduced in 2024 as a limited production run (similar to the Bond St. Crash) available only at 13 Rue de la Paix. One of the rarest, largest, and most desirable Cloche executions, its 37.15mm x 28.75mm case is made of platinum and fitted with a manual-wind movement. Preserving the unique rotated dial layout and architectural case shape of the original that epitomizes Cartier’s legacy of refinement and rarity, it boasts black Roman numerals and platinum hands atop a stunning salmon-colored dial. In a unique twist, and as an homage to its celebration of Cartier’s Paris flagship location, the ref. 4338’s 12 o’clock our marker is replaced by the number 13 as a way to embrace Cartier is history without encroaching on their signature aesthetic too much, but with a twist befitting of its unique construction and limited edition status.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting a stunning salmon dial that has been rotated 90 degrees, the ref. 4338 is clearly not a standard variant from the already-exclusive Cloche collection. Indeed, its 13 numeral at 12 o'clock is a reference to 13 Rue de la Paix, Cartier's Parisian flagship location, as also referenced on its commemorative caseback.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Meaning "bell" in English, the Cartier Cloche's name gives away the shape of its platinum construction, with a uniquely flat 9 o'clock side opposing a bell-shaped, curvy 3 o'clock side, which combine to allow the watch to stand vertically on a desk and act like a table clock when off the wrist.

Condition

The watch is in overall near-mint condition. The platinum case shows some light marks and signs of wear. The case back has well-defined engravings and hallmarks, with a few light marks. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with a black alligator strap with a platinum pin buckle, both in near-mint condition. The watch comes complete with boxes, warranty, booklets, cufflinks, and a travel case.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

A limited edition example of one of Cartier's most eccentric designs, the ref. 4338 Cloche is the largest variant of the collection and combines the practicality of a desk clock with the utility and elegance of a wristwatch in a thoroughly unique package that is further imbued with Cartier's spirit through its link to their spiritual home.
