Introduction
Released in 1917, the Cartier Tank was designed by Louis Cartier after he was inspired by the shape of the Renault tanks he saw on the Western Front during WWI. Perhaps one of the most recognizable pieces of horological design to ever be created, the Tank’s rectangular shape, svelte proportions, and timeless aesthetic have enabled it to earn a top spot within the horological hall of fame. Amongst the plethora of models that belong to this iconic collection is perhaps the purest distillation of its design, the Tank Louis Cartier. True to the original, the Tank Louis Cartier features the same rounded case sides called “brancards” that stretch to form its lugs as the watch Louis Cartier designed all those years ago, which spawned the now-legendary collection and all of its associated models such as the Tank Francaise, Tank Cintree and so on. Offered here we have the wonderfully rare and relatively unknown Jumbo stepped Tank ‘New York’ ref. 15716. Launched in the early 1970s before the Must de Cartier collection was launched, this timepiece features a large 28mm x 38mm brass case with a 14kt yellow gold plating and a stepped design that immediately differentiates it from other Tank designs. With around 2500 examples made versus the 5000 that were made for the Paris and London workshops, the New York ref. 15716 is certainly the rarest of the three variants.

THE DIAL
Featuring Cartier's signature white dial design with their famed blued steel hands, exploding black Roman numerals, and Cartier's cursive script, the ref. 15716 display is emblematic of Cartier's typical dial design of the time.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Measuring a whopping 38mm from lug to lug and 28mm across, the ref. 15716 is certainly a "Jumbo" Tank. Furthermore, with its stepped case adding a dimension of depth to its construction, this timepiece's case is a pleasure to wear.

Condition
Watch is in very good overall condition. Case shows moderate signs of wear, with some small areas where the brass is showing thru the gold plating. (Lug corners, particularly on the highest level of steps along the crystal corners) The original dial in very good condition with light signs of aging and spotting. Watch was recently serviced by Cartier and associated paperwork is included.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
Pre-dating the Must de Cartier collection and offered as a much larger Tank variant with its stepped gilt brass case, the ref. 15716 and its London and Paris counterparts offer a unique glimpse into where Cartier was headed at the time, while maintaining the brand's design prowess.
