Introduction

Holding a storied history that spans over a century, the Cartier Baignoire watch is a true icon in the world of luxury timepieces. Designed by Louis Cartier in 1912 specifically for the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia, it was the iconic brand’s first oval-shaped watch. Boasting an elliptical case design that was a departure from the traditional round and rectangular shapes of watches at the time, the Baignoire (named after the French word for “bathtub” due to its shape), or “oval-shaped watch” as it was known at the time, showcased Cartier's pioneering spirit and innovative approach to watchmaking, and watchmaking design. Initially designed as a bespoke piece for the select few, the Baignoire quickly garnered attention for its distinctive shape and refined aesthetics and finally entered regular production in 1957. Throughout the decades, Cartier has revisited and refined the Baignoire, releasing various interpretations that highlight different facets of its design. From minimalist interpretations with sleek, curved cases to opulent versions adorned with diamonds and intricate guilloché patterns, each Baignoire model reflects Cartier's commitment to craftsmanship and artistic expression. Offered here we have an original 1968 Cartier London Baignoire Large, where the watch was originally sold through Cartier’s London branch, the home of the iconic Crash. Made of 18kt yellow gold and sporting its original white dial, this 31mm x 23mm example comes on with its original 18kt yellow gold deployant folding clasp. Additionally, given that it is the large size, it is even more special given the absolute rarity of large examples, with the majority of London Baignoires being the smaller 25mm x 19mm size, which is a rarity too by all means.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Proving just how timeless Cartier's design has been over the 100+ years, the Baignoire's off-white dial features the same Roman numerals and blued steel hands that have become a lynchpin of Cartier's modern design.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Famously named the Baignoire after its bathtub-like shape, the Baignoire's oval case bends ever so slightly, making it the perfect fit as it drapes across the wrist. Boasting 31mm x 23mm dimensions, this example is the highly coveted and extremely rare 'Large' variant.

Condition

The watch is in overall very good condition. The yellow gold case has surface scratches and some nicks, as expected of a watch of this vintage. The screws in the case sides have some wear. The case back has well-defined engravings, with a couple of deeper scratches and some tarnishing. Watch bears an "n" hallmark dating it to 1968. The dial has some chips around the edges and a couple of marks, with a more noticeable crack at eight. The blued hands have some oxidation. The watch is fitted with a black alligator strap with a yellow gold Cartier deployant clasp in excellent condition. Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

One of Cartier's most celebrated watches in the modern era of watch collecting, the Baignoire has gone from a relatively obscure offering from the Parisian giants to one of their most famed models thanks to its distinctive shape and stunning design. Offered as the large variant from London, this example is the ultimate must-have for vintage Cartier aficionados.
