Introduction
Few wristwatches have exerted a greater influence on twentieth-century design than the Cartier Tank. Conceived by Louis Cartier in 1917 and introduced commercially in 1919, its distinctive rectangular case was inspired by the silhouette of military tanks seen from above, with the parallel vertical brancards forming an integral part of the design. The original Tank Normale established an aesthetic that would become one of Cartier's most enduring signatures, combining strong geometric lines with elegant Roman numerals, blued steel hands and a restrained dial. While the Tank would evolve into numerous variations over the following decades, the Normale retained the distinctive proportions and architectural character of Louis Cartier's original creation. Early examples remain particularly desirable among collectors, especially those featuring unusual case dimensions or configurations.
Dating to circa 1945, this Cartier Tank Normale 'Grande' represents a rare, larger interpretation of the original design. Measuring 33 × 24.7mm, its 18K yellow gold case offers noticeably greater wrist presence than the standard Normale, which typically measured approximately 30.5 × 23mm. The matte white dial features elongated radial Roman numerals, an inner minute track and blued steel épée hands, together with the Cartier signature and 'France' designation. Beneath the dial is a manually wound 10-ligne LeCoultre movement signed E. W. & C. Co. Inc., the European Watch and Clock Company associated with Cartier's historic watchmaking operations. Particularly noteworthy is the accompanying 18K yellow and pink gold deployant buckle, bearing Edmond Jaeger maker's marks and French gold hallmarks. With its larger case, traditional construction and distinctive period details, this New York-retail-associated example offers a fascinating expression of Cartier's original Tank design.

THE DIAL
The matte white dial features elongated black Roman numerals arranged radially around an inner minute track, creating a distinctive interpretation of Cartier's traditional Tank aesthetic. Blued steel épée hands provide an elegant contrast against the pale surface, while the Cartier signature and 'France' designation reflect the watch's period origins.

THE BUCKLE
The watch is accompanied by an unusual 18K yellow and pink gold deployant buckle featuring a distinctive D-shaped clasp. The interior bears the Edmond Jaeger maker's mark, two French eagle's head gold hallmarks and the hand-stamped number 11'969. Its two-tone precious-metal construction provides an additional point of interest for collectors of early Cartier watches.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and minor nicks throughout. The case engravings and French eagle’s head hallmarks remain clear and very well preserved, while the Edmond Jaeger punch mark has softened slightly over time. The dial exhibits patina throughout, with hairlines visible at the corners and along the minute track. There are areas of surface loss near the centre of the dial and at approximately 1, 4, and 8 o’clock. It is fitted with a brown leather strap and 18K yellow gold deployant clasp showing surface scratches, with clear engravings and hallmarks. Please note that this watch was originally sold at Sotheby's along with a display box which is no longer included.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
The Tank Normale Grande offers a rare opportunity to appreciate Louis Cartier's original design in unusually generous proportions. Its 18K gold case, sophisticated LeCoultre movement and remarkable two-tone deployant buckle make it a particularly compelling example of early Cartier watchmaking.
