Cartier Paris Tonneau

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Launched in 1906, just a short two years after their Santos model, the Cartier Tonneau is a stunning barrel-shaped timepiece that draws direct inspiration from the Art Deco movement. Named “Tonneau,” meaning “Barrell” in French, the Tonneau’s gently curved mid-case swoops out from its narrow lugs in a rather gorgeous manner. Constructed of 18k yellow gold, this 1980s example conforms to the wrist with its curved profile resulting in a wonderfully comfortable wearing experience. Containing perhaps one of Cartier’s most iconic design elements, this example features a white guilloche-engraved dial with large black Roman numerals and Cartier's sought-after “Paris” signature at 6 o’clock that indicates that this example was retailed in Cartier's flagship boutique in Place Vendôme, Paris. Additionally, with its blue sapphire cabochon, blued steel hands and manual-wind movement, this wonderful watch retains the unparalleled essence of Cartier’s rich horological heritage in total abundance.

Condition

In extremely well preserved condition. The case has become oxidized with age that is easily cleaned. The case with very nice proportions and sharp lines. The screw heads either side of the band are in good condition. The case back with very crisp engravings. The dial is in equally good condition. Overall a very well kept wristwatch in original condition.

Our Perspective

An iconic piece of Cartier design that would go on to influence several collections throughout Cartier's heritage, the Tonneau stands as a celebration of Cartier's uncanny ability to create beautiful designs that would go on to become timeless.
