Introduction
Few watch designs have demonstrated the longevity and versatility of the Cartier Tank. First conceived by Louis Cartier in 1917 and introduced commercially in 1919, the Tank established a distinctive design language based on clean geometry, elongated brancards and the seamless integration of case and dial. Over the following decades, Cartier explored numerous interpretations of this original concept, from the Tank Cintrée of the 1920s to the more architectural designs of the later twentieth century. Introduced in 1989, the Tank Américaine drew particular inspiration from the elongated proportions of the Cintrée, reinterpreting its curved rectangular case for a new generation. With its pronounced curvature and elegant proportions, the Américaine became one of the most recognisable modern expressions of Cartier's enduring design philosophy.
The Tank Américaine Large ref. 1741 represents a particularly sophisticated interpretation of this design, combining an elongated 18K white gold case with an automatic movement and a distinctive grey dial. Measuring approximately 45mm by 26.5mm, the curved rectangular case is designed to follow the contours of the wrist, while its polished surfaces and smoothly integrated brancards retain the architectural elegance associated with the Tank family. The textured grey dial features prominent Arabic numerals, central seconds and a date aperture at six o'clock, introducing a more contemporary aesthetic than the traditional white Roman numeral dials commonly associated with Cartier. A sapphire-set winding crown provides the familiar finishing detail, while the black alligator strap is secured by a matching Cartier 18K white gold pin buckle. Combining the established proportions of the Tank Américaine with an unusual dial configuration and precious-metal construction, this reference offers an interesting alternative to Cartier's more familiar dress watches.

Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K white gold case shows surface scratches and more noticeable nicks throughout, particularly to the front and sides of the case. The case back shows some small nicks, while the engravings and hallmarks remain well defined. The cabochon-topped winding crown is in excellent condition. The dial and hands are in near-mint condition. It is fitted with a black leather strap and 18K white gold Cartier pin buckle showing surface scratches. The original 18K white gold Cartier deployant clasp is also included.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
The Tank Américaine ref. 1741 offers a distinctive take on one of Cartier's most enduring designs. Its elongated white gold case, unusual grey Arabic numeral dial and automatic movement create an appealing combination of classical Cartier styling and contemporary practicality.
