Introduction
Released in 1917, the Cartier Tank was designed by Louis Cartier after he was inspired by the shape of the Renault tanks he saw on the Western Front during WWI. Perhaps one of the most recognizable pieces of horological design to ever be created, the Tank’s rectangular shape, svelte proportions, and timeless aesthetic have enabled it to earn a top spot within the horological hall of fame. Amongst the plethora of models that belong to this iconic collection is perhaps the purest distillation of its design, the Tank Louis Cartier. True to the original, the Tank Louis Cartier features the same rounded case sides called “brancards” that stretch to form its lugs as the watch Louis Cartier designed all those years ago, which spawned the now-legendary collection and all of its associated models such as the Tank Francaise, Tank Cintree and so on. Offered here we have a contemporary version of the Tank Louis Cartier, the 18kt yellow gold ref. WGTA0176, launched in 2023. Boasting a tri-colored dial inspired by Cartier’s ‘trinity’ concept whereby they use all three gold colors at once, this example’s display is a departure from the Tank’s typically restrained aesthetic, and instead embraces exuberance and Cartier’s jeweler side.

Moving away from Cartier's signature dial design details, the WGTA0176 features a stunning tri-tone yellow, rose and white gold dial that pays homage to Cartier's famed trinity aesthetic, whereby all three golds are used simultaneously. In addition to that, the WGTA0176 features gold hands to match its gold construction instead of Cartier's often-used blued steel hands.
THE CONSTRUCTION

Our Perspective
Perhaps one of the few truly timeless timepieces, the Tank Louis's aesthetic looks as fresh and modern as ever. Even with its over 100-year-old design, it still captivates those who wear it and onlookers alike, and the WGTA0176's stunning tri-tone dial certainly doesn't hurt things either.
