Introduction

Founded in 1955, Corum are a watchmaker famed for their unique outlook on horological design, with collections such as the Coin and Bubble both standing as aesthetically unique and interesting. Belonging to the Coin collection, the watch that we have here is not a wrist watch, but a pocket watch using a 1 Yen Japanese silver coin from the Meiji Era, which ran from 1868 until 1912, while Emperor Meiji was the ruler of Japan. Made using 900 grade silver with 90% silver and 10% copper, this 40mm coin pocket watch is powered using a quartz Corum movement, and lacks almost any form of inscription with the exception of small black printed inscriptions reading “Corum” and “quartz”. Featuring a silver chain, this is a marriage between world history and horology.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting only two inscriptions, this pocket watch's display is a bright silver with the Imperial Crest of Japan taking the 12 o'clock position.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Cut into two with a small notch hollowed out to fit its movement, the Coin Pocket Watch is the exact same size as the original coin but with the addition of a winding crown, a split through its center, and a chain attached to allow wear.

THE CASEBACK
THE CASEBACK

Completely untouched, the pocket watch's caseback reveals the coin's age through its wear and patina.

Condition

The watch is in overall very good condition. The silver case shows numerous scratches, nicks, and areas of tarnishing across the surface. The dial, formed from a coin face, has some light marks and nicks, while the hands are very clean. The watch is fitted with a silver chain and coin terminal, both in very good condition.

Our Perspective

Using an interesting source material to create a timepiece, this Coin pocket watch perfectly showcases Corum's avant-garde design DNA.
