Introduction
Launched in 2004 and produced until 2008, the F.P. Journe Octa Chronographe was the very first wristwatch chronograph to feature a large date display and a fly-back chronograph with a 120-hour power reserve – quite the feat for the mid 2000s. As with nearly every F.P. Journe timepiece, the Octa Chronographe revolutionized the conventional idea of what was possible for a watch of its type. Powered by the cal. 1300-2, the Octa Chronographe’s 30mm diameter and just 5.7mm tall chronograph movement packs a fly-back feature, a return-to-zero, and an elapsed 60-minute counter alongside twin concentric disks for its large date function and an incredibly impressive 120-hours of power reserve within just three layers of labyrinthine architecture. Featuring an 18k rose gold oscillating weight and incredible finishing, the cal. 1300-2 is a stunning sight to behold and is fitting for such an exceedingly rare and beautiful watch.
Sporting F.P. Journe’s signature dial design, the Octa Chronographe features three subdials, with the two overlapping dials at 3 o’clock display. The hours and minutes are shown on the larger of the two, and the running seconds on the smaller of the two. Conversely, the elapsed 60-minute chronograph counter is located at 9 o’clock on the dial and comes decorated with the same guilloche engraving within its core as the larger hours and minutes subdial that it mirrors. Atop the dial within the larger of the two grey sandblasted sections, the large date display can be found acting like a crown on one of F.P. Journe’s early entrants within the kingdom of independent watchmaking, a kingdom they have certainly conquered.
