Introduction

Franck Muller emerged as one of the defining personalities of the independent-watchmaking revival of the 1990s, combining serious mechanical watchmaking with a design language that was unmistakably his own. Central to that identity was the Cintrée Curvex case, whose dramatically curved tonneau form became synonymous with the manufacture. The Casablanca collection embraced this architecture with particularly bold dials and oversized numerals, while the Master Calendar added useful complications without sacrificing the visual confidence that made early Franck Muller watches so immediately recognisable.

Dating to 2006, this ref. 5850 Q 24 combines a silvered dial with a centrally indicated date and a 24-hour day/night display at six o'clock, powered by the automatic calibre 2800. This example is particularly striking in 18K yellow gold, with the sculptural case paired with a matching five-link yellow gold bracelet rather than the leather strap more frequently encountered on the reference. The case back is individually engraved No. 24, adding another interesting detail to an already distinctive configuration. Substantial, complicated and unmistakably Franck Muller, it captures the exuberance of the manufacture during one of its most important periods.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The silvered dial features Franck Muller's unmistakable oversized Arabic numerals. A dedicated central hand indicates the date against an inner scale, while a subsidiary display at six o'clock provides a 24-hour day/night indication. Despite the amount of information presented, the composition retains the bold, highly graphic character synonymous with the Casablanca.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The 18K yellow gold case measures approximately 32mm across and 45mm including its lugs, with its compound curvature allowing the elongated tonneau form to follow the wrist. The case back is individually engraved No. 24, while the matching five-link 18K yellow gold bracelet extends the precious-metal construction across the wrist.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and light marks, with a few small nicks to the case side. The case back has excellent engravings, two partially legible hallmarks, and some surface scratches, with wear to the screw heads. The dial shows some marks towards the outer edge in a few places, while all printing remains crisp and the blued hands are in near-mint condition. The calendar hand on the white metal surface shows some oxidation. The 18K yellow gold bracelet shows surface scratches and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 21 links, 5 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7½” wrist. Comes with box, certificate, document holder and setting pin in pouch.

Our Perspective

The five-link yellow gold bracelet makes this a particularly compelling interpretation of the 5850 Q 24, transforming the familiar Cintrée Curvex silhouette into an almost continuous piece of jewellery. Combined with the guilloché dial, pointer date, 24-hour display and individually numbered case, it embodies the confidence and originality that established Franck Muller as one of the most distinctive independent watchmakers of the modern era.
