Introduction

Founded in Geneva in 1992, Franck Muller quickly established a reputation for combining traditional Swiss watchmaking with a far more expressive approach to design. Although best known for the tonneau-shaped Cintrée Curvex, the Liberty collection demonstrates another side of the manufacture, using a classical round case while retaining the oversized numerals, elaborate detailing and distinctive personality associated with the brand.

This Liberty is housed in a substantial 42mm 18K rose gold case and numbered 187. Its white dial features painted Breguet-style Arabic numerals, leaf-shaped hands and a small seconds register at 6 o'clock, creating a more restrained interpretation of Franck Muller's familiar aesthetic. Through the sapphire display case back sits the manually wound Franck Muller calibre 2210, offering approximately 60 hours of power reserve.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The white dial offers a relatively classical interpretation of Franck Muller's distinctive design language, with large painted Breguet-style Arabic numerals and elegant leaf-shaped hands. A small seconds register at 6 o'clock provides visual balance while allowing the otherwise expansive dial to remain particularly clean.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

Measuring 42mm in diameter, the polished 18K rose gold case gives the Liberty considerable wrist presence while retaining the traditional proportions of a round dress watch. A sapphire crystal case back reveals the movement, while the watch is fitted with a black leather strap and matching 18K rose gold pin buckle. The case is individually numbered 187.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K rose gold case shows surface scratches and small nicks across the case and bezel. The Franck Muller-embossed winding crown is in excellent condition, with a few light surface scratches and nicks. The hallmarks on the lug sides remain crisp. The display case back has surface scratches while retaining well-defined engravings. The dial and hands are in near-mint condition. It is fitted with a black leather strap and an 18K rose gold Franck Muller pin buckle showing light surface scratches.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The Liberty is an interesting departure from the tonneau cases most readily associated with Franck Muller, presenting the watchmaker's recognisable aesthetic within a more traditional round form. In rose gold with its crisp white dial, oversized Breguet-style numerals and manually wound movement on display, this example combines the flamboyance of early Franck Muller with the proportions of a classical dress watch.
