Introduction

Produced during the early 1970s, the Gallet Multichron 12 represents one of the final great chapters in the long history of mechanically sophisticated chronographs from the historic Swiss brand. Founded in 1826, Gallet built a strong reputation for producing practical and highly capable chronographs, particularly within aviation, motorsport, and professional timing circles. The Multichron line became especially admired for combining functional design with excellent movement quality, and the example offered here is powered by the respected Excelsior Park 40-68 calibre, a movement celebrated among collectors for both its refinement and reliability. Featuring a bold cushion-shaped case, luminous acrylic bezel, and highly legible racing-inspired dial, the Multichron 12 perfectly captures the adventurous sporting aesthetic that defined chronograph design during the era.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

The grey dial features contrasting white chronograph subdials accented by orange detailing on the minute counter, creating a highly legible and distinctly sporting appearance. Luminous hour markers and a white inner tachymeter ring further reinforce the functional racing-inspired aesthetic that defines the Multichron 12.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

The 39mm stainless steel case retains its original sunburst finishing and is fitted with a luminous acrylic hour bezel, one of the model’s most distinctive visual elements. The broad case architecture and integrated bezel design reflect the bold stylistic direction embraced by many chronographs during the early 1970s, while the substantial proportions provide strong wrist presence.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case retains its sunburst finish to the front, with surface scratches and small nicks visible throughout. The case back has light surface scratches. The bezel is well defined, with some delamination evident to the 12-hour insert. The dial remains excellent, with a vibrant orange telemeter scale and some light surface spotting. The hands show minor discoloration to the lume, while the orange chronograph hand retains a vibrant hue. It is fitted with a steel bracelet showing surface scratches and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 11 links and fits approximately a 7¼” wrist.

Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Our Perspective

Visually this watch has so much going on, yet it all works beautifully together. The tricolor dial, acrylic bezel, and cushion case come together in one sexy package. The co-branded dial, along with the tachymeter, and telemeter scales make for an extremely compelling watch. Breitling recently purchased Gallet and it will be interesting to see what they do with the brand. I feel that these original historic pieces will increase in value as the brand becomes better known outside the vintage watch world.
