Gay Frères occupies an important place in 20th-century watchmaking despite rarely appearing on the dial. The Geneva bracelet specialist supplied some of Switzerland's most prestigious manufactures, producing everything from intricate precious-metal bracelets to the steel designs that would later become inseparable from some of watchmaking's most recognisable sports watches. Its work was sufficiently important that surviving period bracelets are now collectible objects in their own right, particularly when they retain evidence of the retailers through which they were originally sold.

This 18K yellow gold example has a connection to Serpico y Laino, the celebrated Caracas retailer whose name is associated with important watches from Rolex, Patek Philippe and other leading Swiss houses. Period examples confirm that Gay Frères bracelets supplied through Serpico y Laino could carry both GF and S&L markings. The clasp of this bracelet is signed by both Gay Frères and Serpico y Laino, with a "51" date code and carries a personal engraving also dating to 1951. Measuring approximately seven inches in length, it comprises 21 links and has 18mm straight end links, making it a particularly evocative standalone example of the exceptional bracelet-making that accompanied some of the finest watches of the post-war period. Bracelet can be worn on many watches and was likely fitted previously on a Patek Philippe.
