It’s not often that homage watches become collectable in their own right, but that is exactly the case for the Gevril Tribeca. Launched in 1999 and re-released again 20 years later, it is an entirely faithful homage to the Rolex Daytona ref. 6263 Paul Newman. Featuring the exact same 37mm x 15mm proportions as the original, and a dial that pays very close attention to the ‘exotic’ dials that the Paul Newman Daytonas are known for, it features the same white backdrop, black subdials with quarter counters and red chapter ring along its periphery. Furthermore, in lieu of the red “Daytona” inscription over the 6 o’clock subdial, the Tribeca features a red “XXX/500” inscription that denotes the individual number for each example out of the possible 500 that were made in steel, with this example being James Bond’s number, 007. By mixing its robust construction with its faithful interpretation of the Paul Newmans’ design language and a genuinely restricted supply, the Tribeca has succeeded where so many other homage watches fail; as they are very often cheaply made in high numbers using modern designs that don’t speak to the wants and needs of collectors, which is ultimately where the Gevril Tribeca differs from them.

A faithful homage to the original that has developed its own position within the watch collecting niche that it occupies, the Gevril Tribeca democratizes the Paul Newman thanks to its much more agreeable price tag, yet retains the same exclusivity with its limited release.
