Homage watches rarely become collectable in their own right, but the Gevril Tribeca is one of the more convincing exceptions. Originally released in 1999, the Tribeca borrowed heavily from the visual language of the vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, particularly the exotic-dial references now universally associated with Paul Newman. Crucially, Gevril went considerably further than simply reproducing the dial. The 37mm stainless steel case, acrylic crystal, screw-down chronograph pushers, drilled lugs and tachymeter bezel were deliberately chosen to recreate the proportions and character of the vintage chronographs that inspired it.

This example is the R005/1, the classic panda configuration with a white dial, contrasting black registers and red detailing. It was one of several Tribeca variants, with Gevril also producing reverse-panda, champagne and precious-metal versions, but the R005/1 is perhaps the clearest expression of the concept. The steel variants were produced in individually numbered editions of 500 pieces, with the number incorporated prominently into the dial design where the Daytona signature would ordinarily appear on its inspiration. This example is number 87. Beneath the deliberately vintage exterior is a distinctly different proposition mechanically in an automatic ETA 2824 base movement paired with a Dubois & Dépraz 2020 chronograph module.
