Introduction
Produced during the early 1970s, the Gigandet ref. 1382 “Big Boy” embodies the oversized and highly expressive chronograph design language that defined the era. Powered by the dependable Valjoux 7733 manual-wind chronograph movement, the model combined robust sporting functionality with bold proportions and eye-catching dial aesthetics intended to stand out during a period of increasingly experimental watch design. The “Big Boy” nickname, adopted by collectors, reflects the watch’s substantial wrist presence and chunky architectural styling. While many examples of this model were produced in chrome-plated brass cases, stainless steel variants such as the example offered here are considerably less common and particularly sought after today. Combining distinctive styling with honest mechanical charm, the ref. 1382 represents an appealing and increasingly collectible vintage chronograph from the golden age of accessible sports watches.

THE DIAL
The grey dial features a classic twin-register chronograph layout with chunky applied hour markers and a contrasting white outer tachymeter track that reinforces the watch’s sporting character. The balanced proportions and bold detailing give the watch a distinctly motorsport-inspired aesthetic, while the restrained use of color allows the unusual case architecture to remain the focal point.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 41mm stainless steel case gives the “Big Boy” its unmistakable wrist presence, with broad surfaces and strong proportions typical of early-1970s chronograph design. Unlike the more commonly seen chrome-plated brass versions, this example’s stainless steel construction adds both rarity and durability.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches and marks, while the case back retains well-defined engravings with some surface scratches. The bezel shows some wear to the black finish around the edge, while the insert has developed a pleasing fade with light surface scuffs. The crystal shows some marks and scratches. The dial remains very good, with some damage visible at the edge near three o’clock along with light surface marks. The hands show some discoloration to the lume, while the orange chronograph hand retains a vibrant hue. It is fitted with an orange single-pass nylon strap.
Our Perspective
They call this reference “Big Boy” for a reason. It’s 41mm, which back in the day was a very large watch, but nowadays is a nearly perfect size. Most of these models are chrome-plated brass, so this stainless steel version is unusual. The grey dial, orange accents, and black bezel remind me of the Tudor “Homeplate,” so I sometimes refer to this guy as the “Poor Man’s 7031.”
