Introduction
In 2001, German luxury house Goldpfeil embarked on one of the more unusual collaborative projects of the early independent-watchmaking era, inviting seven members of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) to create watches for its Seven Masters collection. Among them was Vianney Halter, already developing the unconventional visual language that would make him one of the defining independent watchmakers of his generation. His contribution, the ref. GPVH, was produced in a reported edition of 108 pieces and transformed the familiar rectangular wristwatch into something altogether more mechanical and architectural.
Halter took inspiration from vintage rangefinder cameras, a theme carried through virtually every component. The 40mm by 29mm 18K white gold case is covered with hundreds of hand-hammered micro-dimples intended to evoke the leather covering of an old camera, while the crown recalls a winding knob. Two apertures display the jumping hours and geometric moon phase, complemented by an arrow-shaped central minute hand and central seconds. Inside is the automatic 35-jewel calibre GUB 60, developed by Halter for the project, with a sophisticated moon-phase mechanism calculated to deviate by only one day in 139 years.

THE DIAL
Halter divides the display across two rectangular apertures for the jumping hours and geometric moon phase, with central minutes and seconds completing the indication. The arrow-shaped minute hand references Goldpfeil’s emblem, while the unconventional arrangement reinforces the rangefinder-camera inspiration that informs the entire watch.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Machined from 18K white gold, the rectangular 40mm by 29mm case takes its inspiration from vintage rangefinder cameras. Hundreds of hand-hammered micro-dimples evoke a camera's textured leather covering, while the unusually elaborate crown recalls a winding knob. Even the white gold buckle draws inspiration from the mechanism used to load photographic film.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K white gold case shows surface scuffs and marks to the polished sections, while the hand-finished front remains well defined. The case back retains crisp hallmarks and engravings, with some more noticeable scratches. The main dial and hands are in near-mint condition, as is the jumping-hour aperture. The moonphase dial shows discolouration. It is fitted with a white Delugs rubber strap and associated Delugs deployant. Please note that the original Goldpfeil/VH buckle is NOT INCLUDED with the watch.
Our Perspective
The Seven Masters project captures an important moment when independent watchmaking was still an intimate and highly experimental corner of the industry. Vianney Halter's contribution is unmistakably his, being mechanically serious, deliberately unconventional and built around an inspiration extending far beyond conventional watch design. With its camera-derived architecture, jumping hours and exceptionally precise moon phase, the GPVH is a fascinating early example of the imagination that would come to define Halter's work.
