Introduction

The Grand Seiko 57GS occupies a pivotal place in the history of Japanese watchmaking. Introduced in 1964 as the successor to the landmark Grand Seiko 3180, it was the first Grand Seiko to incorporate a date display while continuing the brand's relentless pursuit of chronometric precision. Manufactured at Suwa Seikosha, the 57GS combined technical refinement with increasingly sophisticated case finishing, laying the foundations for the design philosophy that would later define Grand Seiko.

Today, it remains one of the most important vintage Grand Seiko references and a cornerstone for serious collectors of early Japanese horology. Offered here is a superb example dating to circa 1965 and powered by the manually wound calibre 5722B. Featuring a beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial and the angular case that introduced Zaratsu polishing to the Grand Seiko collection.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial perfectly reflects Grand Seiko's early pursuit of legibility and refinement. Applied faceted indexes, sharply finished dauphine hands and the framed date aperture combine to create a design that feels both understated and unmistakably Grand Seiko.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The stainless steel case showcases the strong, angular lugs and crisp bevels that distinguish the 57GS. As the first Grand Seiko reference to adopt Zaratsu polishing, it marked an important step in the evolution of the brand's case finishing, establishing the distortion-free mirror surfaces that have since become synonymous with Grand Seiko.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks. The case back retains an excellent central medallion and well-defined engravings. The dial is in excellent condition, having developed a gentle, even patina across the surface, with a small mark at the edge near the 51-minute marker. The hands remain clean. It is fitted with a black leather strap and a steel pin buckle. Comes with a spare crystal in its original packet.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The 57GS represents one of the defining chapters in Grand Seiko's early history, bridging the gap between the pioneering first-generation models and the more technically ambitious references that followed. With its historically important calibre, first-generation Zaratsu-polished case and exceptionally complete original accessories, this is an outstanding example of one of vintage Grand Seiko's most collectible and significant references.
