Introduction

Released in 2021, the Grand Seiko Heritage “Omiwatari” SBGY007 is one of the latest hand-wound time-only Spring Drive timepieces to come from the iconic Japanese watchmaker. Inspired by the frozen surface of Lake Suwa in Central Japan, its light blue dial features a subtly texturized surface much like that formed when the gentle waves of the Lake Suwa freeze over in the depths of the Japanese winter. These ridges are thought of as the tracks left behind by the Shinto deity, Takeminakata-no-kami - the patron deity of the ancient Suwa Taisha Shrine. These tracks are named the Omiwatari, the pathway of the god. Powered by the impeccably finished manual-wind Spring Drive cal. 9R31, the SBGY007 is a relative rarity within Grand Seiko’s offerings as the brand normally focuses on automatic Spring Drive movements. With its blue textured dial and Grand Seiko’s signature finishing technique, Zaratsu polishing, adorning the entirety of its stainless steel case, this 38.5mm beauty is an elegant piece on the wrist with it beautifully balancing understated elegance and an intriguing design language wrapped in Japanese lore.

THE DIAL

The SBGY007's crown jewel, its light blue textured dial recalls the frozen surface of Lake Suwa in central Japan during the winter months.

THE MOVEMENT

Powered by the impeccably finished manual-wind Spring Drive cal. 9R31, the SBGY007 is a sight to behold under its exhibition caseback with its accurately counter-sunk blued screws and jewels dotting its immaculate baseplate, which even houses a power reserve indicator.

THE MOVEMENT II

Another view of the impeccably finished movement, reminiscent of the movements found in the ultra high end Seikos like the Eichi II and the 8 Days.

Please note: Due to the nature of the spring drive movement, we are unable to provide a timing machine readout for this watch.

Condition

Overall condition of the watch is like new. No signs of wear, aside from some light creases in the strap.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, an alternative leather strap to the existing exotic version, shall be provided.

Our Perspective

A beautiful example of Grand Seiko's craftsmanship, the SBGY007's dial, Zaratsu polishing, and movement finishing easily exceed the levels to which one might find in a timepiece priced well beyond its retail value.
