Introduction
Released in 2019 as part of the Grand Seiko Elegance Collection that celebrated the Spring Drive movement’s 20th anniversary, the SBGY003 is one of the iconic Japanese watchmaker’s finest hand-wound time-only Spring Drive timepieces. Powered by the impeccably finished manual-wind Spring Drive cal. 9R31 which features a power reserve indicator on its baseplate, the SBGY003 is a relative rarity within Grand Seiko’s offerings as the brand normally focuses on automatic Spring Drive movements. This decision allows the SGBY003’s 10.2mm tall 38.5mm stainless steel case to wear with a relative elegance and dressiness that Grand Seiko’s typical offerings do not possess. Featuring a stunning silver dial with an engraved sunburst pattern, incredibly well-executed dauphine hands and applied indices, the SGBY003 showcases Grand Seiko’s impressive level of craftsmanship, which is further revealed through the Zaratsu polishing that adorns the entirety of its stainless steel case. An elegant piece on the wrist that beautifully balances understated elegance and an intriguing design language with second-to-none Japanese horological engineering, the SBGY003 is a timepiece that deserves the Grand Seiko name printed on its display.

THE DIAL
Featuring a monochromatic silver dial, the SBGY003G sports an engraved sunburst pattern that works to highlight the relative simplicity of its undisturbed time-only display.
THE CONSTRUCTION
A watch for all occasions, the SBGY003 exudes a restrained elegance that Grand Seiko's dressier timepieces are known for and results from its Zaratsu polished surfaces, and clean swooping lines.
THE MOVEMENT
Powered by the impeccably finished manual-wind Spring Drive cal. 9R31, the SBGY003G is a sight to behold under its exhibition caseback with its accurately counter-sunk blued screws and jewels dotting its immaculate baseplate, which even houses a power reserve indicator.
Condition
The watch is in near-mint condition. It shows a few signs of very careful wear, including a couple of light marks from strap changes and a small mark on the bezel edge at two o’clock. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with a Grand Seiko black alligator strap and a stainless steel deployant clasp with light marks. The watch is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, guarantee, booklet, hangtag, and cloth pouch.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
A beautiful example of Grand Seiko's craftsmanship, the SBGY003's dial, Zaratsu polishing and movement finishing easily exceed the levels one might find in a timepiece priced beyond even the SBGY003's retail value.
