Introduction

Founded in 1854 as a watchmaking shop, Gubelin are renowned as one of Switzerland’s most historical, and important, jewellers and watch retailers. While they typically sell the watches of other brands, they have also dabbled in their own timepieces, as we have here with this Chronograph, which happens to harbor a significant bit of history. Originally owned by Chief Justice Earl Warren, who was the 14th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court between 1953 to 1969, the 30th Governor of California between 1943 and 1953, and the 20th Attorney General of California between 1939 and 1943, this timepiece lays claim to one of mid-century America’s most important wrists. Featuring a stainless steel case with lyre lugs, a silver dial with applied golden dial furniture, and an engraved caseback that shows this watch was gifted to Chief Justice Earl Warren by his wife Nina, this timepiece is a rich piece of American history.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case with twisted lugs remains well defined, with surface scratches and light nicks consistent with age. The case back features a very well-defined personal engraving associated with Chief Justice Earl Warren. The dial shows light spotting across the surface along with some damage to the blue tachymeter scale on the outer edge. The applied hour markers show light oxidation, while the hands remain reasonably clean. It is fitted with a brown leather strap and a gold-plated buckle. Comes with documentation relating to the previous auction of the watch as part of a specialist sale of the effects of Chief Justice Earl Warren. Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Our Perspective

It's not often a watch from one of the former Chief Justices of the US Supreme Court comes to the market, and yet here is Chief Justice Earl Warren's Gubelin Chronograph, which also happens to be a fine example of a mid-century chronograph. Grab it while you can.
