Inspired by, and named after, Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated Trans-Antarctic expedition that spanned from 1914 to 1917, the Habring² Endurance was designed and released in collaboration with Spanish collector group CronotempVs in 2020 as a limited edition release of 33 pieces. Taking inspiration from the harsh conditions of the multi-year ordeal that Shackleton and his men had to overcome when his ship became grounded in ice, the Endurance is a timepiece that features a practical suite of complications in a new and interesting layout that demands attention. With a gray anthracite dial recalling the conditions that Shackleton and his men had to overcome, the Endurance features a running seconds subdial at 9 o'clock that also boasts an aperture that flashes red every 5 seconds to indicate that the movement is running, a complication we have seldom seen ever since it was created in the 1960s. Furthermore, the Endurance also boasts another subdial at 3 o’clock, which provides balance to its dial and houses a power reserve indicator. However, most notably, the Endurance boasts a second aperture at 12 o’clock that acts as an AM/PM indicator, which is the result of the Endurance’s inspiration. In Antarctica, the sun is a permanent fixture in the sky during the summer and, conversely, completely absent during the winter, making the day and night indistinguishable for those unlucky enough to be stuck there. A testament to Habring’s elegant design language and their ability to derive inspiration from the most unlikely of sources, the Endurance is a wonderfully balanced timepiece that also stands as a genuinely capable companion should it be called upon.
