Introduction
The world of independent watchmaking is particularly diverse, but two of the industry's most prominent names have been Habring2 and Massena Lab, founded by husband and wife duo Richard and Maria Kristina Habring and William Massena respectively. In 2020, these three independent powerhouses decided to collaborate for the second time and launch the Erwin LAB02 that we have here. Inspired by 1930s watchmaking like the Erwin LAB01, the LAB02 features a sector dial that is now a two-tone display with a silver center and a champagne chapter ring that houses its raised Arabic numerals. Continuing with the LAB01’s 1930’s dress watch-inspired aesthetic, the LAB02 features the same 38.5mm case construction, but in a more traditional stainless steel than the LAB01’s bronze case. However, unchanged from the LAB01, the LAB02’s caseback still provides a stunning view of its manual-wind movement, the cal. A11MS. Featuring the ever-complicated deadbeat function, the LAB02’s movement drives the second hand only once per second, giving the LAB02 the appearance of a quartz watch. A particularly complicated mechanism, the LAB02 had to be kept as a limited release like its predecessor, and so only 50 examples were produced.

Our Perspective
An exercise in independent watchmakers flexing their horological muscles, the LAB02 goes on to prove that it isn't only the big boys who can indulge in complex complications, stunning dials, and appealing aesthetics.
