Introduction

Few chronographs are as closely associated with the golden age of motor racing as the Heuer Autavia. Introduced as a wristwatch in 1962, the Autavia took its name from the dashboard instruments that Heuer had produced for automobiles and aircraft since the 1930s, combining 'AUTomobile' and 'AVIAtion'. Its rotating bezel, highly legible dial and robust construction made it a versatile timing instrument, equally suited to the cockpit or the racetrack. As the collection evolved throughout the 1960s, Heuer introduced increasingly substantial cases and distinctive dial configurations, establishing the Autavia as one of the defining sports chronographs of its generation.

Introduced in the late 1960s, the second-generation ref. 7763C brought a markedly different character to the Autavia, replacing the earlier rounded case design with a larger 40mm stainless steel construction featuring pronounced angular lugs. This early MK1 example is distinguished by its finely toothed rotating bezel and white central chronograph seconds hand, details that help identify the first execution of the reference. Its black reverse-panda dial features two contrasting registers, powered by the manually wound Valjoux calibre 7730. Together, the bold case architecture, purposeful dial and rotating timing bezel capture the functional design philosophy that made Heuer's chronographs such natural companions to professional drivers and enthusiasts during the 1960s.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The stainless steel case is very well defined, with surface scratches and light marks. The case back shows some wear to the engravings. The pushers and winding crown are in excellent condition. The bezel is very well defined, with the black insert in near-mint condition. The dial is in excellent condition, with some damage to the luminous hour plots at 3 and 9 o’clock. The hands remain clean, with some pinhole cracks to the luminous material in the central minute hand. It is fitted with a black rally-style rubber strap and stainless steel pin buckle.

Please note: The watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Our Perspective

The early Autavia references represent an important chapter in Heuer's development as one of the leading names in motorsport chronographs. The ref. 7763C is particularly interesting for its transitional design, combining the traditional manually wound, two-register chronograph with the more substantial case architecture that would define the collection's later evolution. This MK1 example retains the distinctive fine-toothed bezel and white chronograph hand of the earliest execution, while its original hangtag provides an appealing connection to the watch's period of sale.
