Few vintage Heuers capture the relationship between motorsport, sponsorship and 1970s marketing quite like the Autavia “Viceroy”. In 1972, Heuer partnered with Viceroy cigarettes on an extraordinary promotion that offered customers an Autavia chronograph at a substantial discount in exchange for the end flap from a carton of Viceroy cigarettes. At a time when Heuer was building increasingly close connections with Formula One, the campaign placed one of its most recognisable racing chronographs within reach of a much broader audience and created a distinctive Autavia configuration that collectors still associate with the Viceroy name.

This early 1970s ref. 1163 V displays the defining Viceroy aesthetic: a black dial with contrasting white registers and vivid red accents, housed within the substantial 42mm stainless steel Autavia case. Inside is Heuer's automatic calibre 12, part of the pioneering Chronomatic family of automatic chronograph movements introduced at the end of the 1960s. This example is paired with a stainless steel Hadley bracelet made in the style of the Gay Frères beads-of-rice bracelets associated with period Heuers and is accompanied by a Heuer chequerboard red presentation box.
