Heuer Carrera 45 Chronograph 3647N

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Released during Baselworld in 1963, the Heuer Carrera was Jack Heuer’s answer to the market’s growing demand for pure motorsport-inspired chronographs. Having just taken the brand over in 1962, Jack wanted to put his own stamp on Heuer and, as such, sought for the Carrera to be a straightforward chronograph with a legible dial and intuitive design, a style of watchmaking that he preferred. As such, the Carrera was born and quickly became one of the most famous chronographs on the market. Today, it exists as one of the most legendary sports watches ever designed, and vintage examples like this Carrera ‘45’ ref. 3647 are highly coveted for good reason. Fitted with a simple dial, the Carrera ‘45’ ref. 3647 displays the running seconds at 9 o clock with a 45-minute chronograph subdial at 3 o'clock as linked to the central chronograph seconds hand. With stick indices and luminescent hour hands, the ref. 3647 was perfectly legible at a quick glance in high-octane situations like racing around a race track. Offered with either a black dial or silver one, the example we have here is found with the black (Noir) dial with a silver chapter ring that forms an attractive border between the black dial and the Carrera’s thin bezel.

THE DIAL

Starting in 1964, Heuer would inscribe the ref. 3647's dial with SWISS T to highlight the use of tritium luminescent in the Carrera's dial. Prior to this it would only read SWISS.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Measuring 35.5mm in diameter and sporting its iconic sharp lugs, the Carrera's construction is distinctive on the wrist and entirely timeless.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Consigned by a private collector, this Carrera is in very nice and original condition. The dial is very charismatic with only very light spotting. The case is very crisp with sharp lines and definition. There is light surface wear to the case which is consistent with the watches age. Overall, a very nice example.

Our Perspective

A truly legendary watch that has escaped the hardships of going out of fashion, the Carrera has remained fashionable ever since its release. Only when we get to examine genuine vintage examples like this can an enthusiast understand why the Carrera became as successful and beloved as it has become - its effortless design.
