Introduction

While plenty of watchmakers have earned their plaudits by producing tool watches, Heuer are often forgotten about, even with a legacy that spans across many decades and into several sports and use cases, just like the Heuer Skipper. Launched in 1967 as a watch for sailors and yachtsmen, it featured a countdown timer and a rotating bezel that could be used to keep track of elapsed time. One of its most notable features is its countdown timer, which was a useful tool for sailors preparing to start a race. This countdown timer is set by rotating the bezel to the desired time and then pressing the start button. The timer would then count down from the set time, and an alarm would sound when the time elapsed, thus marking the beginning of the race. Worn as a tool watch, the Skipper is a large watch for its time, with a 42mm diameter stainless steel case ensuring that its display was legible at all times. As part of its design, it also featured a rather distinctive tri-color subdial at 3 o’clock, that was used as part of it countdown feature. A specialized watch for a specialized purpose, the Skipper demonstrates Heuer’s unwavering desire to produce timepieces that were unique, useful and truly in a class of their own even as far back as the 1960s, an ethos that has contributed to the brand’s success even to this day.
