Introduction

A remarkable fusion of traditional watchmaking and modern technology, the IWC Pilot Chronograph ref. 3740 Mechaquartz embodies the spirit of aviation with its striking design. Launched in 1989 and produced until 1992 when it replaced by the ref. IW3741, it features a robust 36mm stainless steel case and a sleek black dial that enhances its legibility, crucial for pilots, meaning this chronograph is built on pure function. Powered by JLC’s innovative cal. 631 Mechaquartz movement, the IW3740 offers the precision of quartz combined with the mechanical charm of traditional chronographs. This unique mechanism provides a smooth sweep of the second hand, reminiscent of mechanical watches, while maintaining exceptional accuracy. The watch’s durability make it suitable for various environments, and its supple Milanese bracelet make it exceptionally easy to wear. With its blend of functionality and style, the IWC Pilot Chronograph IW3740 Mechaquartz stands out as a reliable companion for both aviation enthusiasts and watch collectors alike.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Offered with the original tritium dial as showcased by the two letter Ts in "T SWISS MADE T" across the 6 o'clock periphery of the black dial, this ref. IW3740's hour markers have aged to include a wonderful orange patina that is a highly cherished detail among collectors.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

With its large dial taking up most of its 36mm case thanks to the IW3740's thin angular bezel, this timepiece's construction has clearly been geared towards simplicity and ease-of-use, as also evidenced by its large pump pushers and thick winding crown.

THE BRACELET
THE BRACELET

Offered on a surprisingly sleek and supple Milanese-style bracelet, the IW3740's tool watch aesthetic is broken up by what is a wonderfully light and pleasant bracelet to wear.

Condition

The watch is in overall near-mint condition. The stainless steel case shows only light signs of wear, and the case back has well-defined engravings. The black dial is near mint, with very clean lume and crisp hands. The crystal has a few light scuffs. The steel bracelet has some light surface marks. The bracelet is fitted with 22 links, 2 of which are additional, and fits an approximately 7” wrist. The watch comes with its box, travel pouch, warranty card, hang tag, and a spare IWC alligator strap with IWC-signed buckle.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

An intriguing blend of IWC's tool watch design and 1990s quirkiness, the IW3740 is equally robust and capable thanks to its dial and case, and elegant and luxurious thanks to its Milanese bracelet.
